In the past I’ve recommended Photoshop Elements, but at current prices it makes more sense to rent Photoshop CC and Lightroom. Most people will also need a layer-based editor for montages and design projects. It’s the Creative Cloud Photography Plan that gets my warmest recommendation, though.

£100 is remarkably good value for such a powerful application, and £59 to upgrade from version 5 isn't bad either. Overall, Lightroom is polished, efficient and superbly equipped to meet the needs of photographers. These issues are few and far between, though. There may be some sense to this but I’d like to have the option. The software doesn’t allow duplicate files to be imported twice when they’ve been copied to a new location. There are comprehensive search and filter facilities but I’d prefer more flexible options to sort the library. Folders are shown in tree view if they're imported that way, but otherwise it's by disk and then alphabetically. However, Lightroom Classic offers a lot of additional features and speed improvements over its predecessor. Retouch full-resolution photos, apply photo filters, or start photo editing wherever you are. The Adobe Creative Cloud subscription model is a bitter pill to swallow for some photographers, especially since Lightroom 6 was available for a one-time payment. Easy image editing tools like sliders and filters for pictures simplify photo editing. There are a couple of minor irritations to the interface that remain unresolved. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a free, powerful photo editor and camera app that empowers your photography, helping you capture and edit stunning images. Then again, the Creative Cloud Photography Plan bundles Lightroom and Photoshop CC for £103 per year, so going for a subscription rather than a perpetual license may not be such a bad idea. It seems pretty stingy that people who buy Lightroom outright are excluded.

They also get access to the Lightroom iOS and Android apps that provide basic editing and synchronisation of Collections with the web and the desktop application.
Flash has now been replaced by HTML 5, but the ability to host them on Adobe’s servers is only available to Creative Cloud subscribers.
